Visiting Grandparents in Connecticut…

DSC_5502We just got back from our trip to Connecticut.  What a fun trip we had!  Isobel loved playing with her grandparents and great-grandpa!  I think her favorite part was going to Easy Pickin’s Orchard and picking out apples.  She did a great job!!!

There are oodles of pictures of Isobel at the park and the orchard.  Enjoy!

Hidden photos…

DSC_5336Ok, so I cleverly (or not) buried a few pictures of Isobel riding with her Daddy on the new John Deere tractor.  She had a great time - no fear whatsoever.  I naturally have mixed feelings about this…

Anyway - check out the photos.  She’s a John Deere - lover!

State Fair

State FairWe went to the state fair and saw lots of neat things… the craziest chickens and roosters you’ve ever seen, pigeons, tons of bunnies, cows, alpacas, stunt dogs, Clydesdale horses… but the most amazing thing was that Isobel spent a lot of time in her Jeep stroller (which is mighty helpful for pushing meandering idiots (many with McCain stickers) aside, as well as the off-roading in the parking lots).

Isobel especially had a good time yelling “moo!” at the cows. There are more pics in the gallery.

My 22.5 pound southpaw and her 101 words

Isobel had her 18 month well-visit today.  She weighted in at 22.5 lbs, right at the 50% mark for weight.  All other stats are normal as well.  When the Dr. asked how many words she speaks I answered quickly, “101.”  The Dr. was delighted.  Actually, we can add #102… she pointed to the picture on the wall and said “Elephant” (sounded more like elf-ant) twice in the office.

Anyway - she was a very good girl today, pointing to her nose and giving eskimo kisses to her teddy bear.  She was exceptionally well mannered throughout the appointment.  Mommy & Daddy are very proud.

Oh - and she’s clearly demonstrating a preference for writing with her left hand.  I think she’s probably a south paw!

Visiting the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Childrens Garden

Lewis Ginter ChildrenWe took Isobel to Lewis Ginter today.  I’m a terrible mommy and didn’t bring sun block (or a swim suit or a swim diaper — or even a change of clothes) so we didn’t stay very long.  Still - she had a great first visit.  I’m sure we’ll go again some time.

Pedals, Here We Come!

DSCN1185We got Isobel her first trike this weekend.  After a lenghty trip to Toys ‘R’ Us, we decided on this one.  I successfully managed to avoid anything motorized (though I must say it was more dificult than I thought it would be).  It was the only one that had a seatbelt, parent push bar, and alleges to be appropriate for a child as young as 1 1/2 years old.  It is quite the girl ride.  She was quite intrigued by it and enjoyed doing a lap (or 20) around the kitchen island.  Hopefully, this will mean we’ll be able to resume our evening walks (whilst she trikes along).

Isobel phones mommy…

Isobel called me yesterday.  She used her daddy’s iPhone, found my picture, and called me.  When I answered, she said, “Mama?”  I replied, “Hi Baby.”  And, since she was done with me, she put the phone down and went away.

First Haircut

We finally took Isobel to get her first ever hair cut. We went to Divas and Dudes where she was issued a certificate and a balloon.

Divas and Dudes was kind enough to give Isobel a balloon and a certificate with her picture on it as well as a lock (or so) of hair. So cute:

OCD or cheap labor? You decide….

Should I worry about my child being OCD?

Over the last few months, it has been evident that Isobel has some rather distinctive OCD patterns.  For one, when “eating” tuna noodle casserole, she always separates the peas from the carrots from the noodle (the tuna is too mixed in to separate, but she does spit it out).  She has often lined up the peas — that’s a little unnerving — just before she squishes each one, individually, between her two fingers.  Also, she appears to be biologically incapable of allowing a door to remain open.  One of her most beloved activities is to patrol the downstairs and close the door to the pantry, the door to the bathroom, the hall closet door, and most recently, the french doors to Daddy’s office.

When not displaying obsessive compulsive behaviors such as those, she tends to be a bit of a neat freak.  This has been aided by the fact that our kitchen trash can is equipped with a motion sensor such that waving your hand across the sensor opens the trash can (and it then closes automatically).  This is not only a hygeine bonus, but also makes it easy for a 15 month old to get the hang of it.  Yesterday, while playing in the living room, Isobel discovered the box to Guitar Hero Aerosmith.  She was desperate to open the box (which, standing on end was in fact taller than she is) so I agreed to help her.  I removed the cardboard box from the sleeve, but that was not good enough - she wanted to see the contents of the cardboard box as well.  So I opened that up to reveal the plastic bags and packets of silica gel.  Before she really had an opportunity to notice, I scooped up all the silica gel packets.  She, however, grabbed the plastic bag that so clearly states, “THIS IS NOT A TOY.”  So I said to Isobel, “Isobel, that’s not a toy.  It says so right on the bag.  Can’t you read?”  And then I laughed at my own joke (which I’ve made before but remains equally funny), and continued, “let’s go throw away the trash.”

Isobel turned around, and wrapped her hand with the plastic bag.  She walked over to the front door where, on the rug, she discovered a piece of dog toy.  As though it were a poorly deposited kitty dropping, or vomit, or what have you, she placed her plastic-bag-covered hand over it, scooped it up, rubbed the rug where she’d found it, and walked over to the trashcan and prompty disposed of the bag and its contents.  So now, I’m not sure if I should be worried about the OCD issue or if I should be paying her for her services.

Happy 4th of July

Here’s a little year-to-year comparison…

Isobel last year: Isobel this year:
Happy 4th
Look who\'s independent now!

Ok, so last 4th of July, Isobel got her first cold. So that was a bummer. This year, however, we had very exciting plans to go see the fireworks display at the local fairgrounds. Isobel wasn’t exactly thrilled about having to take a late afternoon nap so that she’d possibly (and I stress possibly) be able to stay awake for the show. We had a thunderstorm that cleared up before it got dark. We left the house at 7 so we could listen to the Capitol Steps 4th of July performance on NPR — it was, as one would expect, delightful. Unfortunately, as we got closer to the fairgrounds, it was evident that the storm was worse than we had felt and significantly worse near the county courthouse and fairgrounds. So, due to power failures and lines that were down, they had to cancel the event. What a bummer! The bad weather also resulted in a cancellation of Saturday’s plans — another trip to the beach for a friend’s birthday party. Ah well. Maybe next year!

Anywho - as requested, more pictures have now been posted.  Please enjoy them!
